Is an E-Bike Worth It? Real Costs and Range for Valley Commuting

The question we get most about e-bikes is not about motors. It is whether the thing will actually replace a car trip, or whether it ends up in the garage next to the treadmill.
Here is the honest version, using real Valley distances.
What the Valley actually asks of an e-bike
Canoga Park to Warner Center is about four miles. To Northridge is around seven. Woodland Hills is five. Across to Van Nuys is closer to twelve, and Sherman Oaks is fifteen or so.
Almost every one of those is a round trip well inside the range of any e-bike we sell. The Valley is flat, which is the single biggest factor in real-world range, and the distances are short. This is close to ideal e-bike terrain.

Range claims and what shortens them
Manufacturer range numbers assume a light rider, low assist, flat ground and mild weather. Treat the advertised figure as a ceiling, not an average.
What actually eats range: heat, which the Valley has in abundance and which is hard on batteries. Higher assist levels. Hills. Rider and cargo weight. Underinflated tires, which cost you more than most people expect. And stop-and-go riding, because every restart from zero pulls hard on the battery.
Plan on getting somewhere between sixty and eighty percent of the advertised range on a hot Valley day at moderate assist. If your round trip fits inside that, you will never think about range again.

Class 1, 2 and 3, briefly
Class 1 is pedal assist only, up to 20 mph. Class 2 adds a throttle at the same speed cap. Class 3 is pedal assist up to 28 mph and is the commuter's class, because that extra speed is the difference between keeping up with side-street traffic and being an obstacle in it.
Class matters for where you are allowed to ride. Many paved paths and park trails permit Class 1 and 2 but restrict Class 3. If most of your riding is the river path, that is worth knowing before you buy.

The actual cost of ownership
A commuter e-bike from us starts around $1,899. Charging costs pennies a session. A battery is good for several years of regular cycling before capacity drops noticeably, and replacing it is far cheaper than most people assume.
The real ongoing costs are tires, brake pads and chains, and e-bikes go through all three faster than regular bikes because they are heavier and quicker. Budget for service. A bike carrying a motor and a battery at 20 mph deserves brakes that work.
Set against a car trip, the math gets favorable quickly if you replace even three or four trips a week. Set against gas, parking and wear, most Valley commuters we talk to are ahead within the first year.
Where an e-bike is the wrong answer
If your commute is over twenty miles each way, if you have nowhere secure to park at the other end, or if there is no safe route between you and where you are going, an e-bike will not fix that. We would rather tell you now than sell you one.
Route quality matters more than any spec. Come in with your actual route and we will talk through it honestly.
