The Best Bike Trails Near Canoga Park and the San Fernando Valley

The San Fernando Valley does not get enough credit as a cycling destination. Most people think of it as a grid of wide boulevards and strip malls. Riders who actually live here know better. Within 20 minutes of Canoga Park you have access to paved river paths, shaded greenways, fire road climbs, and legitimate mountain singletrack. You just need to know where to look.
This guide covers the best riding options for SFV cyclists at every level, from first-time riders looking for a flat, safe route to experienced mountain bikers ready to push their limits in the Santa Monica Mountains. We have ridden all of these. This is not a repost of a tourism brochure.
The Chandler Bikeway: Best Paved Urban Ride
The Chandler Bikeway runs 4.4 miles along a former rail corridor through the east Valley, connecting Valley Village to North Hollywood. It is fully paved, mostly flat, and separated from traffic. For families, commuters, and anyone riding a cruiser or e-bike, this is the go-to. The surface is well maintained and the route passes through a surprisingly pleasant stretch of residential neighborhoods and public art.
It connects to the Orange Line Bike Path at the eastern end, which extends the rideable corridor significantly. If you are commuting from the Valley into the city, this combination gets you a long way without touching a car lane.
The LA River Bike Path: Best Long-Distance Paved Route
The LA River Bike Path is one of the most underrated long-distance cycling routes in Southern California. From the Valley, you can access it at Balboa Boulevard in Encino and ride it south through Burbank and into Griffith Park, with the option to continue all the way to downtown LA. The full route covers over 50 miles of connected path.
The stretch through the Valley is mostly concrete with some asphalt sections. It is not the most scenic riding in the world but it is car-free, direct, and genuinely useful for both training and commuting. Road bikes and hybrids are the right tool here. The Balboa entry point is about 10 miles from Canoga Park, easily ridden as a warmup.
Topanga State Park: Best Mountain Bike Destination
For mountain bikers, Topanga State Park is the crown jewel of the Santa Monica Mountains and it is less than 20 minutes from Canoga Park. The park offers over 30 miles of trails ranging from wide fire roads to technical singletrack. The Eagle Spring Loop is a classic 10-mile moderate ride with excellent views and manageable climbing. More experienced riders push out to East Topanga Fire Road and beyond.
The terrain at Topanga rewards a quality hardtail or full-suspension mountain bike. It is dry and loose in summer, occasionally muddy in winter. Bring a minimum of two water bottles, a tube, and a pump every time. Cell service is unreliable once you are in the park. This is not the place to find out your bike needs a tune-up.
Rocky Peak Park: Best Ride for Climbing
Rocky Peak Park sits at the northwestern edge of the Valley near Simi Valley and is accessed off the 118 freeway. The main Rocky Peak Trail is a 7-mile out-and-back that climbs over 1,400 feet to a summit with views across the Valley and out to the ocean on clear days. It is exposed, dry, and relentlessly uphill on the way out.
This trail is best suited to hardtail mountain bikes and confident riders. The descent is fast and loose with some technical sections. It is not a beginner trail but it is one of the best rides in the region if you have the legs for it. Go early in summer. By 9am the exposed sections are already brutal.
The Marvin Braude Bike Trail (The Strand): Best Weekend Ride
Not technically a Valley trail, but close enough to earn a spot on this list. The Marvin Braude Bike Trail runs 22 miles along the coast from Pacific Palisades to Torrance Beach. From Canoga Park it is about 30 minutes by car to the Malibu or Pacific Palisades entry points. Flat, paved, ocean views the entire way. If you want to introduce someone to road cycling or break in a new bike, this is the ride.
It gets crowded on weekend mornings, especially between Venice and Santa Monica. If you want clear pavement, go before 8am or ride the Malibu end instead.
Get the Right Bike for the Trails You Want to Ride
Every trail on this list calls for a different kind of bike. The Chandler Bikeway is perfect for a cruiser, hybrid, or e-bike. The LA River path rewards a road bike or fast hybrid. Topanga and Rocky Peak demand a proper mountain bike with reliable brakes and a frame that can handle loose, technical terrain. Showing up to the wrong trail on the wrong bike is the fastest way to have a bad day.
